Honoring Grandpa Kit (Freebie)

This post was originally posted on July 4, 2007.

I am reposting it to let you know that this kit has now been added as a freebie to all that are subscribed to the Subscriber Area of my site. To become a subscriber to see all of my videos for $5.50 per month. This is my first addition to the freebie section in the Subscriber Area, but I do plan on adding more quickly and, thereafter, shutting down my store.

I am combining the Themed Thursday this week with a freebie to celebrate the 4th of July and to honor my Grandpa who passed away this year.

{edit} Themed Thursday challenges are now in the forums. You can find this one here.

This is a layout I made with my freebie kit. I have studied several photos of Grandpa in uniform and because he has no medals or other insignia on his uniform in these photos, I believe these photos to be the ones taken before he left for WWII. Grandpa was in Patton's Army, in the Battle of the Bulge, and made it all the way to the wall before his legs froze. I like the quote I found as it seems applicable to how brave he must have been heading out.

Quote on Layout: "The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it." Thucydides

Claudette made some freebies with the kit. Read the post about it here.

If you use my kit, please do share with me your layout. I love warm fuzzies!

The frames in this kit and several other elements were made from the photos above, so they are authentic of the time period. Credit: Atomic Cupcake actions.

Themed Thursday

I am going to be taking a little break from posting the Themed Thursdays as a meme on the blog. It is a lot of work to do the posts and I seem to be having trouble getting participants. I've given the meme over half a year and most weeks there are only a couple, if any, posts in Mr. Linky to other blogs.

I will continue this challenge in the forums and you can join me there. Maybe after a rest from the meme on the blog, I will start it up again.

*This was a very hard theme for me again! I hope we get easier words soon. I didn't make the list, but enjoy being challenged by others.

I just don't think when I do charity things that I take photos of it. It seems to me something that should be done without getting noticed for doing it. I may have one photo from long ago (and who knows where it is) when we collected toys for Christmas for the Sunday School and dropped them off and I took a photo of the children to share with the Church. I have photos of me and my Little, but other than that, I cannot think of any I've even taken.

So I decided to go for another opportunity to make one of my Garden Analogy layouts.

Here's my layout! It was hard finding applicable photos without going to the really old ones, but was happy to find these. The guys were having so much fun, I quietly looked the other way. If I remember right, someone else came along and corrected them and stopped them. I acted as if I didn't hear a thing.

No credits. I like doing simple layouts all about the photos without papers and element. At least it cost less that way!

I've had one of those "King Midas" days where everything I touch gets messed up (tomorrow I'm turning things to gold), but I wanted to get this up for those who want to participate by entering their links.

Update: Here it is! I was inspired by this Benjamin Franklin quote to journal about how my boys are always content and ask for next to nothing for christmas. I used my freebie stuff for the January designer challenge and ribbon challenge, along with the metal cross made by Iris for the same challenge, and Katie Petiet's frame. I don't do brights well! So I forced myself to use the papers I made, although I'm scrooging about it!

I thought and thought and what came to mind was how much my Granny loved the place where she grew up, so much so that she always returned to it, even if it meant being away from her family.

The frames are made with a solid white box, inside dark grey stroke, drop shadow, and soft light blending mode.

I had to do a new layout for this theme (thanks Tina! uggg!) because I did not have one. Just what I needed to do today, get side-tracked from my goals!

I thought about several ideas, such as a baby snuggling comfortable in a parent's arms, or my Bible, or the comfort of a friendship, but my hubby suggested this one and so I thought I'd go for it. Some day, years from now, my children's children will appreciate knowing this information...lol!

Today's Question of the Day got me thinking about how I should scrap things like this.

A template of this is coming up in the next post!

I want to thank everyone who participated last week! I so enjoy seeing everyone's interpretations of this challenge.

I had no time to scrap, so I had to drag out an old layout, one of my earlier ones. This is the boys' first job--soccer referee. All three of them did this as their first job and it was a great job to get money in their pockets, open a checking account to teach responsibility, and still not invade on school work.

Of course, I cannot remember credits, but I believe the clip was Sandy Dr.......(oh...how do you spell her name?....she used to have her own shop and now is at 3Scraps I think)...Sigh. I made the verticle stripes and remember recoloring someone's paper to match.

I wanted to get this done early so I would not be stressed with it this week. I have added a ton of themes to the sidebar thanks to the help of Tina Williams and a few other great ladies.

The first layout utilizes Betty Jo's blending tutorial and the frame is hers too. The background paper is Melissa Bennett's. I spent a long time extracting two photos and combining the faces and the hair to get a so-so okay photo. His hair is not totally right, but it will have to do.

Credits for the second layout go to Amanda Rockwell's Fresh kit. I was told I needed to try to get out of my box and use bright, fun colors, so this is my attempt! It's still on the darker side though.

I made the M & M candies and the word art and the border will be a part of my next freebie.

I have had a rough few days with hormones, worse than normal, almost crippling. The uncontrolable crying for no reason is embarrassing. Although I feel better, the timing was not good for me to go looking through all my old albums searching for a photo of me holding my boys reading to them. I read to my boys way more than the average mom and it is not documented in one photo and that saddened me. In addition, there are only a few photos of me holding my boys. It saddens me to see this false history recorded as I did nothing but hold my boys when they were little, loving them, reading to them, teaching them. I've asked them before and they do not remember all that time I spent with them and I cannot help but feel a tug at my heart. I wish my hubby would have taken more photos, but he was not into cameras and I was camera shy.

I do hope that my loss will be someone else's gain. Maybe someone will read this and realize that they should be in front of the camera.

So, I took this opportunity to journal my thoughts; yet another sentimental, sappy layout from me.

Oh my goodness! I am SO busy! I have for the first time not gotten this up on time.

Here is my layout! I know digiscrappers will identify with me when I say that I felt a huge satisfaction in getting my "artistic need" out with this layout.

I used my freebie Fall Mini Kit with this layout. This is why it is so hard for me to design as I always use so few elements. I will have a freebie template of this layout available too.

I used the Rule of Thirds art and photography rule to create this layout.
The original photo was much smaller. I used the nine grid block in PSE shapes to target the area I wanted to fill in to make this photo applicable to the rule of thirds. Thereafter, I used the clone tool on the trees and foilage to create "something from nothing" to fill in to the left and above the photo.

Next, I used my tutorial for blurring backgrounds on my newly created photo.

I created the frame to further enhance the rule of thirds concept on the photo. There are now "two" rule of thirds concepts on this photo. In the first rule of third (without frame) my son's head is at the intersection of the grid. Within the frame, the arm is in the intersection of the grid, bring focus to the caterpillar.

Isn't that awesome how two rule of thirds can be combined?

I was happy with my photo, rope, and text, but something was not quite right. It seemed a bit off balance. Then I remember my dotted lines for balance tutorial and it was the perfect touch to fill in the blank areas, ground the layout, and finish the layout off to a T.

I used this meme to inspire me to look through old photos that fit the theme. Our family is certainly the explorers and adventurers! We are always daring to go places unknown. We found these paddle boats and, with no one around, it was a bit scary wondering if they would even float well, without any life vests, but we got in and had a great time. All by ourselves in the wilderness, the further down river we got, the eerier it was, so we turned back.

I used Yin's Template #4 for this layout. I suggest that you head over there and download her templates as they are great!
