Broken Dreams

As children bring their broken toys,

With tears for us to mend,

I brought my broken dreams to God,

Because he was my friend.

But then, instead of leaving Him

In peace to work alone

I hung around and tried to help,

With ways that were my own.

At last I snatched them back and cried,

"How can you be so slow?"

"My child," he said, "What could I do?

You never did let go."

The Story of Taps

The 24-note melancholy bugle call known as "taps" is thought to be a revision of a French bugle signal, called "tattoo," that notified soldiers to cease an evening's drinking and return to their garrisons. It was sounded an hour before the final bugle call to end the day by extinguishing fires and lights. The last five measures of the tattoo resemble taps.

The word "taps" is an alteration of the obsolete word "taptoo," derived from the Dutch "taptoe." Taptoe was the command - "Tap toe!" - to shut ("toe to") the "tap" of a keg.

The revision that gave us present-day taps was made during America's Civil War by Union Gen. Daniel Adams Butterfield, heading a brigade camped at Harrison Landing, Va., near Richmond. Up to that time, the U.S. Army's infantry call to end the day was the French final call, "L'Extinction des feux." Gen. Butterfield decided the "lights out" music was too formal to signal the day's end. One day in July 1862 he recalled the tattoo music and hummed a version of it to an aide, who wrote it down in music. Butterfield then asked the brigade bugler, Oliver W. Norton, to play the notes and, after listening, lengthened and shortened them while keeping his original melody.

He ordered Norton to play this new call at the end of each day thereafter, instead of the regulation call. The music was heard and appreciated by other brigades, who asked for copies and adopted this bugle call. It was even adopted by Confederate buglers.

This music was made the official Army bugle call after the war, but not given the name "taps" until 1874.

The first time taps was played at a military funeral may also have been in Virginia soon after Butterfield composed it. Union Capt. John Tidball, head of an artillery battery, ordered it played for the burial of a cannoneer killed in action. Not wanting to reveal the battery's position in the woods to the enemy nearby, Tidball substituted taps for the traditional three rifle volleys fired over the grave. Taps was played at the funeral of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson 10 months after it was composed. Army infantry regulations by 1891 required taps to be played at military funeral ceremonies.

Taps now is played by the military at burial and memorial services, to accompany the lowering of the flag and to signal the "lights out" command at day's end.

Self-deception

Two little sisters were playing in the park. As the afternoon grew later, one of them said, "I wonder if it's four o'clock yet?" "It couldn't be four," said the other, "because Momma said we were to be home by four, and we aren't." Sadly, like these little girls, too many of us judge where we are by our own standards instead of by God's.

If you would like to visit Louise you will find her at her Personal shop Loucee Creations and Digiridoo Scraps and also on Facebook, Twitter and her Blog. Read more about Loucee Designs here.

lcc_RememberWhen_previewfreebie2

The rules are simple: Download the "Remember When" kit here, use at least 5 items in a layout, upload it to the gallery and put it in the forum thread and you will recieve a PM with a link to the "Now and Then" kit, both from LouCee Creations, our June class sponsor!!

lcc_NowandThen_previewfreebie1
For the download and more information, please see this thread. There are already layouts coming in.
We would ask that you do not download unless you intend to make a layout and give back to our generous site sponsor.

This challenge is open to all, paid and non-paid members both.

We would love for you to make another layout with the second kit and share it too in the same thread.

What are reputations?

Well, I think you know what a "reputation" is, but do you know how to give reputations in the forum?  We are chattering about it in the forum here.  If you want some reputation, just come post and ask for it.  Or just drop by and tell us what yours says right now because it is fun to talk about them.

In the forum, underneath the class icon, is a row of green icons.  If you hover over these icons, it will give you a fun statement regarding your reputation.

Your reputation is given to you by other members of the forum.  It is only as fun as the participation from the members.

To give someone reputation, just look for this star icon on the row underneath each post.

YOUR POWER TO GIVE REPUTATION
Your first year in the forum, when you give someone reputation, you give 1 point for each reputation you give. For each year thereafter, your power to give increases by 1.  However, there are other factors that influence how much you give, so it is difficult to determine your actual giving power.  (In other words, each person has a different giving power.)

You are allowed to give 10 reputations per day.

You must give to 5 different people before you can hit the same user again.

RECEIVING REPUTATION

You cannot receive reputation unless you have allowed it in your settings:
Settings/General Setting/turn on "show reputations." If there is a white icon instead of a green one, it means the reputations are disabled for that individual.

You get 1 point for every 50 posts you make.

To see your points, who gave them to you, and your comment, just click on the "settings" link at the top of the forum.

You can go to the members list and sort by reputation to see who has the most reputation.  Be sure to spread the warm fuzzies around!

OUR LIST
10 points - is a grandiose self-starter memory keeper
50 points - will be organized and efficient
150 points - has a ingenious learning curve
250 points - is a one-of-a-kind picturesque person
350 points - is just shimmering with original artistic ability
450 points - is challenge-oriented aka icon earner
550 points - is just gleaming warm fuzzies everywhere
650 points - is a colorfully skilled layout maker
750 points - has an energetic heart for scrapping
850 points - has an inconceivable creativity
1000 points - is bursting at the seams with enthusiasum
1250 points - has an emotional attachment to images
1500 points - spreads an exuberant scrappy artistic high
1750 points - glows with beautiful rays of scrappy success
2000 points - makes me grin at my computer screen with graphic glory

The size of it all

The website finally finished backing up to my new EHD. Here is the current size of the website. I thought it would be bigger, actually.

Phoneography

I understand there's a new term for taking photos with your cell phone and it is "phoneography" (or iphoneography).  I thought it would make a great new photography challenge.

You can find the phoneography challenge in the forum.

Even if you do not do the challenge, do come and chatter about how you use your phone and any aps you might want to share.

Protect those little hands from sparks

What a great way to protect those little hands from being too close to the sparks in sparklers!  I can see the children holding the fun containers and then being excited about taking them home afterwards.

God vs. TV Commercials

A fifth grade teacher in a Christian school asked her class to look at TV commercials and see if they could use them in some way to communicate ideas about God. Here are some of the results:

GOD is like BAYER ASPIRIN ... He works miracles.

GOD is like a FORD ... He's got a better idea.

GOD is like COKE ... He's the real thing.

GOD is like HALLMARK CARDS ... He cares enough to send His very best.

GOD is like TIDE ... He gets the stains out that others leave behind.

GOD is like GENERAL ELECTRIC ... He brings good things to life.

GOD is like SEARS ... He has everything.

GOD is like ALKA-SELTZER . Try Him, you'll like Him.

GOD is like SCOTCH TAPE ... You can't see him, but you know He's there.

GOD is like DELTA ... He's ready when you are.

GOD is like ALLSTATE ... You're in good hands with Him.

GOD is like VO-5 HAIR SPRAY ... He holds through all kinds of weather.

GOD is like DIAL SOAP . Aren't you glad you have Him. Don't you wish everybody did?

Template #74

This one is really simple, but at least you save the time in creating the frame. I bet you can do this one really fast!

I wasn't going to make it into a template as it is so simple, but then someone asked, and I'm happy to provide.

I'm doing something a little different with the temporary download and sending you to the forum to find the download.

If you have not registered at HW yet, we welcome you to do so.  If you make a layout with this template, using any products, please use the gallery to share the layout and post back in the forum so we will know you used it.

New EHD

I am excited about my new EHD! It is SO small! I put a key on it just so you could see how small it is and, in addition, it is really not much bigger than my cell phone when I set my phone down beside it.

The second EHD that I ever bought has been acting up. I leave it on all the time as my "working" EHD, so it is expected to not last as long as my other EHD's. It is not as large as my other EHD's either. I have to turn it off and let it cool down before it will be recognized again. I figured that this is a welcomed sign in advance that it may be going out, so I bought a new one as my working EHD.

This is the EHD I put things on, such as digital scrapbooking kits and photos, that will not fit on my laptop EHD. This is also the one that I make routine backups to.

I have two other duplicate EHD's that are 1.5 TB that contain every file I own that I do not leave on all the time, but occasionally move things from my laptop to on a permanent basis, such as the videos that are very large for the website.

This little EHD is also 1.5 TB! Wow! Now I have an urge to go and buy more of them to replace my other EHD's! Ah!

Another great thing about this small EHD is that you do not have a cord to plug in for power. My other EHD's have a cord to plug in, plus the USB cord. I have cords everywhere to keep track of and eliminating half of them would be awesome, especially those that need to be plugged in.

Can you tell I'm a "happy camper" about my new EHD?

I think I may have to give the older one to one of the boys, but then again, do I want to be responsible for them loosing stuff if it goes out. Hmmm. What to do?

Some days you . . .

Some Days You . .

Pam asked me to put this text on a cow photo and I was excited to do so!

I might add at the end though . . .

Some days you step in it, some days you don't, but God is always there for you, no matter what the day holds. :)

Eagles in a Storm

Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks? The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come.

When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages, below the eagle is soaring above it. The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm.

When the storms of life come upon us ... and all of us will experience them...we can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward God.

The storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow God's power to lift us above them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure, and disappointment into our lives. We can soar above the storm. Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them.

Yes, it's down again

FeelingNosey

I hope your day is going good. Mine is not.

Yes, the website is down again.

Pray for frustrated me please.

TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 2011

8:00 a.m.
I am in the process of creating a new database on a different database and transferring the old database.  I hope it will go smoothly and we will be back up within a few hours.

12:00 noon
It was supposed to take at most 2 hours to backup the database, but it is still not backed up. It has been four hours now.  There is nothing more I can do until Godaddy does the backup I queued.  Then I can import it into the new database and pray the site gets back up without hassle.

1:00
The database backup finally finished after nearly 5 hours, so I clicked to start the restore. When I backed out to the main page, it said the backup was still pending. I checked the back-up file and saw that the file size was too small and there was an error log. I wrote the help representative and, shortly thereafter, checked the file again and all seemed fine. So who knows if this restore will work or not, whether it is restoring an erred file or the good one, but I am in the waiting mode again.

3:00
Over two hours and it still says "pending restore" and working on a lesson of patience.

4:00
But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Romans 8:25

5:30
The secret of patience is doing something else in the meanwhile. I guess I should go to the gym, even if I am late.

7:00 p.m
Still "pending restore" and my patience is really running thin now.

11:00 p.m.
Hours ago I called hosting and was told there are no errors, but they cannot create an error in order to restart the restore until after 24 hours. They hoped it would happen sooner, but I'm still in a waiting mode and very frustrated. Everything I read online says a restore should happen within an hour. I check the database and it is 162 MB, which from what I can tell online is not that huge. This is just ridiculous.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15
5:00 a.m.
It still says pending. This is utterly ridiculous. This is a business and you cannot just shut down the doors like this.

6:00 a.m.
I brought back the old database with the 500 internal error which constantly comes up. If you can get on, you can view lessons and use the chatbox, but please do not post.

12:00 noon
It is still pending. I guess now I can call the hosting to see what they can do since it is really close to 24 hours and I only have my lunch hour to do it. I got a 500 internal error when I first brought the site up to the old database this morning, but otherwise it has been running lightening fast. So strange.

12:40 p.m.
I called. Now they request my patience up to 72 hours because normally it takes a maximum of 24 hours, but they are having issues. What can I say to them? I have no options but to wait.

6:00 p.m. Still says pending. I realized earlier 72 hours is three days! So unacceptable to have to wait for a database to restore on Godaddy. They want me and you to wait until noon on Friday.

6:00 p.m. I was searching on Twitter to see if there were other unhappy customers and found that GoDaddy did have some major problems. Read here and here. If I had known on Tuesday about Monday's problems, I might have waiting to start this process.

THURSDAY JUNE 16

6:30  a.m.
Dawn and I worked on preparing the a Digiscrap Map show. I had a big spell of dizziness last night so much so that I had to lay down and work hard not to be sick to my stomach.  I have checked the hosting and it still says it is pending.  I'm in disbelief.

2:00 p.m.
Called this this morning just in case I would get someone different to help.  I feel I have been misrepresented along the way and my trust is dwindling.  Still waiting.  Still dizzy too.  Not a good day.

2:30 p.m.
Although I never received an e-mail, it appeared that the restore had completed, but I had to wait until after work hours to work on the connection strings.

5:30 p.m.
The connection strings (config files) were installed and the site would not come up.  I called GoDaddy and was basically told that it looked like I did everything right, but that they could not support help with the config files (in other words, I was sh. out of luck).

6:30 p.m.
Since days ago (1:00 p.m. post above) I had noted that there was an error message that had happened and quickly disappeared, I decided to try a back-up again.  This time, the back-up happened within minutes!  Wow!  So I decided to start another restore and it also happened within minutes! (not days as I'd just been through)  The site came back up!  Whoo hoooo!  No thanks go their help, even though I had suggested that this might be the problem on the phone.

ANYWAY, YOU ALL CAN COME BACK NOW!  PRETTY PLEASE!  I MISS YOU!

The Green Blob

Chatting with the green blob with the white ring around her neck can be fun!  I cannot wait for her to get here in person!  We're going to have a great time!

Oh, what strange things techy problems and gremlins create!

Thanks for being a good sport Dawn and letting me put this up.

My first smoothie

I figured I would have to get a few of these while Dawn is here visiting, so I tried my first one last night. So many choices!

Are the really good for you?

Shape up Paper Pack (for subscribers only)

Angela has put this great shape up paper pack in the forum for subscribers here.  It is very useable being a more muted color palette and I cannot wait to see what you do with it.

Just sharing again!

I'm just so excited about what the new designers are bringing to the forum for paid subscribers.  It is going really well and they are working really hard.  The subscribers are giving back to the designers by using their products and thanking them.  Now THIS is what digital scrapbooking should be all about!  It's so good to see some normalcy in the digiworld that I experienced back in 2005 and 2006.

I invite you to join us as subscriptions are only $5.50 per month.  For this, you have access to all classes, all video tutorials to learn digital scrapbooking and Photoshop Elements, all resources, and all downloads.   However, the best part are the people that hang out here.  They are what makes it all worth while for all my time spent here at HW and what keeps me going.

I wanted to share again a few recent products available.  Subscribers should get these quickly as we never know when the designers will begin taking down the oldest products to add new.  When they are removed from HW, they will still be available in the designer's store.  If you don't get a layout done with the product right away, no worries!  The thread will be there for you to share when you find the time.

I've been previewing the upcoming products and am excited!

Journal cards by Gina which are perfect for our current childhood memories challenge.

Journal prompt cards by Gina.  The layouts using these so far are awesome!

These clipped frames from Gina have already been a big hit!  I love every layout that has come in using these and I appreciate the subscribers taking time to give back to the designers by using the products and posting in the threads.

These shape files come in .PSD format!  This was my new idea to have these just like the layer styles I shared.  It makes them so much more easier for PSE users to utilize.

Here's a video sharing why and how to use them.

We want to challenge the students at Hummie's World to learn how to use shape files more often and be creative with them.  We want to encourage you to learn and grow, not just download products.  Here is a sample layout.

Sherry has shared these date blocks which are great for baby layouts, but also for other layouts.  There are tips in the forum on how to utilize these versatile alphabets to recolor them, merge them with papers, or even use layer styles and blending modes to create your own unique alpha block for your layout.  We want to continue to stretch your imagination and learn.

Just because it is summer - gift for child

You have got to head over to this blog post for the instructions and free download to make this adorable summertime gift!  I would have never thought of a gift "just because" summer is starting, but doesn't it make you all warm and fuzzie?  It would also make for a great party favor for a summer birthday.

Who says kids don't exercise?

Rod found this amazing video "The Firecrackers 2001 Naval Academy."  This is the best video, but I did find the amazing jump rope team on Youtube also and have put those videos below. The do give some closer views of the same tricks.

This video seems squished.

Everybody, I know you can believe in yourself

If you haven't seen this young boy, you need to watch this short video. What an encourager!

Check it out, it was songified!

Bringing flowers indoors for a perfect bouquet

(source)

I am SO doing this!  I love to bring flowers in this time of year from the garden and put them in a vase.  Sometimes we buy flowers and put them in a vase, but often as the flowers start to die and I begin rearranging the flowers, some are often too short to work well after cutting off the dead.

What a great idea this is to allow the flower to drink while making it longer by sticking a straw on the end.  If the vase is not clear, the straw could be any straw.  I'll have to start saving my fast food straws and recycling them.

White with a splash of color

Classic white with a splash of color. The color? It's merely paint chips cut into a tag. Love it! Can you imagine including some of the creative color names on the tag?

The Blood of Jesus

One night in a church service a young woman felt the tug of God at her heart. She responded to God's call and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. The young woman had a very rough past, involving alcohol, drugs, and prostitution, but, the change in her was evident.

As time went on she became a faithful member of the church. She eventually became involved in the ministry, teaching young children. It was not very long until this faithful young woman had caught the eye and heart of the pastor's son. The relationship grew and they began to make wedding plans.

This is when the problems began. You see, about one half of the church didn't think that a woman with a past such as hers was suitable for a pastor's son. The church began to argue and fight about the matter. So they decided to have a meeting. As the people made their arguments and tensions increased, the meeting was getting completely out of hand. The young woman became very upset about all the things being brought up about her past.

As she began to cry the pastor's son stood to speak. He could not bear the pain it was causing his wife to be. He began to speak and his statement was this: "My fiance's past is not what is on trial here. What you are questioning is the ability of the blood of Jesus to wash away sin. Today you have put the blood of Jesus on trial! So, does it wash away sin or not?"

The whole church began to weep as they realized that they had been slandering the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Too often, even as Christians, we bring up the past and use it as a weapon against our brothers and sisters. Forgiveness is a very foundational part of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ! If the blood of Jesus does not cleanse the other person completely then it cannot cleanse us completely.

If that is the case, then we are all in a lot of trouble.

What can wash away my sins?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus! End of case!!!!

"Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved." Psalm 55:23

This just came together too well

I thought of the first half of the words on this photo and got stuck; asked hubby "what does this cow say to you?;" and it fit perfectly. You think?

...and this is my motto today as we have server issues.

Troubles: Prepare to Get Licked

Yes, site is down

Yes, the site is finally all the way down, but that is actually good news!

When intermittent problems, they cannot easily diagnose the problem.

Not that is is all the way down, they have pinpointed the internal server error and are working on it immediately.

Hopefully, we will be back up sometime within a few hours or "worst case sometime tonight" and we will not have any more errors.

I appreciate everyone's patience these last few months. It's been a test of patience for me too! If it doesn't come back up all resolved, I will be even more frustrated, but such is life and we take it one step at a time.

Writing Children's Books with Digital Scrapbooking

I just have to share with you what Diane made for her grandchildren! She made these before in other versions, but this time she shared it as a slide show.

Yes, this is what you can do for children with your digital scrapbooking skills. She makes a book that is very personal and has it printed into a hardbound book.

What you make is up to your imagination. I remember that when my boys were little (eons ago as the youngest is now 19) they most loved the books of real photos and real people. I can see how much young children would love a book like Diane makes that includes a real story.

Dolphin Bubbles

The video below shows God's amazing creation.

Distress

In your distress, stop. Quit running around like the proverbial chicken. Turn immediately to the source of all help and call upon Him. With the little faith you have, call out and ask. Ask that He will take what little bit of faith you have, multiply it a thousand times or more, and ask for resolution of your conflict, your trial, your trouble. Just ask. Hallelujah, Amen and Amen.

It's Not Easy

To apologize,
To begin over,
To be unselfish,
To take advice,
To admit error,
To face a sneer,
To be charitable,
To keep on trying,
To be considerate,
To avoid mistakes,
To endure success,
To profit by mistakes,
To forgive and forget,
To think and then act,
To keep out of the rut,
To make a best of little,
To subdue an unruly temper,
To maintain a high standard,
To shoulder a deserved blame,
To recognize the silver line,
But it always pays: try it.

Journaling Prompt Cards/ June Challenge open to all

I'm personally hoping you will bring back some of my memories! Oh, the things I have forgotten! Maybe some of your memories are actually mine too!

What are you waiting for?  Join us and bring back those memories!

Subscriptions are only $5.50 a month for all products and digital scrapbooking video tutorials and classes. We try to make the hobby affordable for all because we just want you to scrap!

Subscribing students can now find these here in the forum. Do you think you can type your journaling to stay on the lines? I want to see you do it!

If only had $158,006,327 on hand . . .

I work to much and volunteer too much and do not have time for all these troubles coming my way.  Rod offered to see me one hour a day . . . anyone want to make a donation?  I could use it badly!
