5 for 1 Rule/Guide

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In galleries across the digital scrapbooking world, you will often read complaints of lack of comments.
Many people post to fulfill a CT layout requirement for advertising purposes and "drop and run." I feel this often ruins a community spirit.
Many upload and have never experienced a digital scrapbooking community and just do not understand how it works and how to fit in. That's okay, that's what Hummie's World is here for - to teach you the ins and outs.
Being a part of a digital scrapbooking community is being part of an encouraging support circle of people with a common interest. When it seems no one in your real life is interested in your hobby, you can always become active in a gallery and forum for encouragement. When someone posts on my layout immediately after I upload it, it gives me a boost to make another layout and share again because "someone is actually looking at what I've made!"
Education aims to give you a boost up the ladder of knowledge. Too often, it just gives you a cramp on one of its rungs. ~Martin H. Fischer
If you benefit from this type of encouragement, then it is a good practice to remember to leave comments on other layouts in the gallery. Even if you are somehow not moved by comments, it is still a great way to feel great knowing you've made someone else's day.
Such a little thing as a comment can make a big difference to someone in ways you can only imagine. There is no telling what type of day the scrapper is having and how your words of encouragement might be just what was needed.
It has been a long-standing, little known rule (or shall it be referred to as guide) to remember to comment on 5 layouts for every 1 layout you upload. That's a good general personal goal for all digital scrapbookers.
If a scrapbooker experiences encouragement, she gains confidence. Hummie
If you give back to 5 people for every 1 you do, it keeps yourself in check and helps the community. In addition, you never know when your efforts will boom-a-rang right back to you.
Another good suggestion is to observe who has commented on your layouts and follow a gallery link back to that person's gallery to leave them love. I do this often when I upload to other galleries, especially for a particular challenge. The gallery links should be available on the gallery comment post itself for each person.
Dawn and I have committed to comment on every layout that is uploaded in the gallery at Hummie's World. I have now been keeping up with this for over 3 years. It is a lot of work, and very time consuming, but I know those who receive the comments greatly appreciate it. It feels good to "give."
Why not look for layouts without any comments? It may be just the person who is feeling alone and left out that will really helped by your simple support.
The "5 of 1" is not a requirement at Hummie's World, but it certainly is encouraged. It is a way you can help to make this community even better. Just think of how many comments each person would receive if everyone put this guide to practice.
The "5 of 1" rule or guide is a great thing to practice wherever you may upload a layout.
or another way to look at it is that many CTs - the majority I'd like to think - are posting yes, for advertising, but they've also put a lot of them into their pages. They still care how a page looks and comes together, and use personal photos, and use the pages for their albums. Maybe they could be considered to be contributing to the community spirit by uploading pages that some may find interesting, even inspirational. They provide information on where to find the kit(s) and show people ways to do things in a visual way.
Maybe they could contribute more in the forum(s), maybe not. Each to their own. The pages still get people visiting the galleries, which in turn leads people to the forum, so it all helps! Plus I think people quickly come to realise which sites are larger and more commercial than others, and which are smaller and more personal, and they take what they want from each. Which is not to say people shouldn't contribute in a forum if they can! Just a slightly diff way of perceiving the way things are done by some people! Plus, I do wonder, if people generally feel they 'should' comment on a page, or are doing it to attract comments for themselves, are you really getting the most heartfelt comments? (And I would NOT include you and Dawn in this Hummie, LOL, as your comments are always personal and most def NOT mass-produced!!) I'm talking forums generally here throughout digiland!
Def food for thought here! There seems to be a lot of introspection in digiland atm...keep seeing it everywhere I go! Am wondering what's up?!!!!
Bernie, you make some good points.
However, this post is not against CT postings, but to discourage CT people from "dropping and running."
If there are more "dropping and running" than commenting, then those that are motivated by the comments spend a lot of time commenting on layouts of people who never return any and are left with the scale tipping the wrong way.
You do bring up a good point that I did not mention though and I do agree that if you are going to do the 5 for 1 rule, be sure to make genuine comments and not just "great layout" comments.
