Digital Scrapbookers Recipe Book Gift

I am excited to announce our "gift giving" project for December.

I am asking that each person submit one favorite recipe.

I plan on posting the book on Christmas Day (or Christmas Eve) for everyone to share with their friends and family. (See below on how to embed and download.)

I want this to be open to everyone and I envision it to be a digital scrapbooking community wide collection of recipes, not just those who frequent Hummie's World. Therefore, please pass this onto your favorite designers.

For a video sharing how to submit the page, see this blog post.

RecipeBookFormat

The format of the recipe submission shall be as indicated in the above graphic.

For consistency, please make the background white and the background should be 8 x 8.

This should allow for free "minimal" advertising in the information that is provided below the recipe.

I will be uploading the gift book at Issuu (my account). It will be available for download too!

If you have not had an opportunity to check out Issuu, I encourage you to do so. I think you will be surprised at the reading material available in every topic imaginable. Just utilize the search box and see! I be you will find some familiar names in the digital scrapbooking world, as well as some popular magazines.

You can connect as friends and join groups as well, so there are social media aspects to Issuu.

Once you find a magazine you like, just click the "Subscribe to user" button and the next time an issue of that magazine comes out, it will be easy to find.

Here is a shot of an issue on my homepage by Carina Gardner. I am sure you will recognize this name in digital scrapbooking.

Click and it will automatically zoom and follow your mouse as you read. Click on the arrows to the right or the left to turn the pages. To escape from any view, look for the "x."

At the top of every book are options to share, print, embed, download (if enabled by the person who uploaded the magazine) and comment.

PS! Since I grabbed these images last night, it appears that Issuu has changed the interface!
You will now find these images where you can share, print, embed, download, and comment.

Be sure to leave a comment if you enjoy a magazine as it encourages others to continue their good work. A comment is such a little thing that you can do that will make a big difference to someone else.

Here is an example of a book embeded in a blog post. Why not share your favorite magazines with others?

Pruning

I don't know why, but I'm always obsessed with keeping things organized.

When I try to e-mail from the forum, so many of the addresses are bad e-mail addresses because they were either spammers or people have registered and then never returned and since changed their e-mail address.

I'm not about numbers. I never really have been. Sure, it's fun to watch the Facebook Fanpage or Twitter follower numbers grow, but I really don't look that often. I enjoy the people who actively communicate with me.

I've thought about doing this before, but on a whim, I decided to do it today.

Here were the stats in the forum before I pruned the forum. You will see there are 4,067 members.

I set the software to delete everyone who has not logged in since December 31, 2008, (almost 2 years) and who had zero posts. Now there are only 2,446 members left.

Wow! So many have joined and never participated at all!

Of course, I welcome all of them to return. They just need to create a new account.

So when you see stats in other forums, please know they are a false outlook of the site, especially if these numbers include spambot members. I know a lot of the early members here were spambot accounts. I feel I get fewer of them now that I've set stricter settings in the forum, but I was naive when I first opened up!

I know that smaller databases run smoother, so that is my main reason for taking this action.

Dawn did personally e-mail everyone when we started the newsetter inviting them to join, so if anyone was interested, they are getting the newsletter and can rejoin.

I figure that most of the freebies that people come for are in an area that everyone must have posted at least once to see, so these people who have not logged in for almost 2 years are not even interested in those and a big percentage of them won't even notice their account was removed.

I hope you all don't think I'm crazy for pruning!

Now, to run some optimazation scripts to keep things runnings smooth.

Our First Real Christmas Tree

Original posted 12/8/06

It's time to share another craft!

This one is a bit lame.
Years ago, when we only had one child, my husband and I would travel about 30 miles with our friends to her parent's farm and tramps about out in fields looking for the perfect Christmas tree and cut it down ourselves. I remember stories of my parents doing that when they were first married and I was thankful to have a friend that could offer that to us also.

When we put up our first real Christmas tree, it was WAY too tall for the ceiling. Amazing how much bigger it was in the house than the fields. So we had to cut off the bottom of the stem. Sentimental me, I could not just throw it away, I had to keep it as a keepsake to represent our first real tree.

But what to do with it? It was just a block of wood. This is what I ended up doing with it, a bit lame, but it does get unpacked and displayed every year.

The arrival of our electric train under the tree eventually did away with our real tree years.

30 Days of Gratitude (Nov 30)

See this post for an introduction to the 30 Days of Gratitude and video sharing how to use the patterns and how to download them.

Today I am thankful that these are the last three patterns to share (for now) because I've grown weary of doing this every day! Giggle. But I have enjoy sharing them and the feedback I've received and the examples I've seen of them in use. Thank you for you!

Who Started Christmas

Who started Christmas?

A woman was out Christmas shopping with her two children. After many hours of looking at row after row of toys and everything else imaginable. And after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids.

She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the year. Overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every housewarming, taste all the holiday food and treats, getting that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, making sure we don't forget anyone on our card list, and the pressure of making sure we respond to everyone who sent us a card.

Finally the elevator doors opened and there was already a crowd in he car. She pushed her way into the car and dragged her two kids in with her and all the bags of stuff. When the doors closed she couldn't take it anymore and stated, "Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up and shot."

From the back of the car everyone heard a quiet calm voice respond, "Don't worry we already crucified him."

For the rest of the trip down, the elevator it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.

Let's not forget to keep the One who started this whole Christmas thing in our every thought, deed, purchase, and word. If we all did it,just think of how different this whole world would be.

Why is it . . .

Why is it that whenever I stick an artificial plant in a container, it never looks artistic like the ones I see in magazines? Oh, maybe I need the label.

I found this one in the Gifted Magazine. It is jammed packed with gift giving ideas.

What's new here?

It seems I am always changing things around here at Hummie's World. There's always behind the scenes tweaking to do.

I think it's just like the grocery store. Just when you think you know where everything is at, they move everything around so you will see something new and be tempted to buy it.

Yes, I've moved a few things around in recent weeks. Mainly to simplify the site. I've long had this bar at the bottom of my blog, but I decided to make use of it throughout the entire website.

I want to introduce you to the bar and help you learn to navigate it and make the most use of it. Of course, this is the way the bar looks right now, bit it's likely to change often! I've already tweaked it many times since installing it.
The first icons to the left are for playing games, sharing pages on the site (the plus sign), seeing my Flickr photos, and watching my Youtube videos. Right now the bar is green for the Christmas holidays, but I'll probably change it up from time to time just to redecorate the place.
Now I don't want to tempt you to play games and waste time. We are here to get scrapbooking done! So don't be too distracted! However, for those moments when you need to zone out for a minute, there are a few games on this link.
For instance, use your mouse arrows to catch gifts and candy canes in Santa's bag. All the games are simple and mindless. They have many to offer and I'm sure I will be substituting them out for new ones from time to time.

The plus sign link brings up the sharing options. You can share any page you are on, including gallery pages and blog posts, or information on the homepage, or tutorials, right from this link.

The Flickr gallery button opens up my images in cooliris. If' you've never played with cooliris, I suggest you click and try it out. It's so cool how the photos float. You can install cooliris in your browser to view images anyway. Did you know that? http://www.cooliris.com/

You do not have to go to Youtube to see my latest videos. They will play right from the bar. Cool, huh?
The next two links are vital links that I ask you to take note of. The first is Twitter which includes Dawn, hubby, and me. This used to be at the top of the page and I noticed many people utilizing it. Be sure to break the habit and click for ease in following us. I know many like to just know when we are in the forum and when we are not and this is where you can pick up that information.

The second used to be in the notifications area under the chatbox and is a link to important new things at Hummie's World. Here is what the links look like when you click on them.
The last two icons to the right bring up the Facebook fanpage and my personal twitter.
You can connect to the Fanpage and post right from this tool. You can even "like" the fanpage if you are not a fan yet.
This is what the second Twitter looks like. You can click to follow me on twitter from here if you do not already follow me. The difference between this twitter and the other is that this is only my information (not including Dawn and hubby).
The bar can be tucked out of way if it annoys you and then easily maximized again at any time.

I hope this helps you to understand a bit more about where some things have moved to here at Hummie's World. Please give me feedback as to whether or not you are utilizing this bar and if you like the new location for notifications and twitters from us.

Only one more day of these! Oh my. I've grown weary of posting them, but I hope you haven't grown weary of downloading them. I have three of them for you on the last day, tomorrow.

I am thankful for music that always seems to lift my spirits and be there for me ready to keep me company.

Get the Advent Virus Before it Gets You!

Doctors warn we are still in the lingering days of the cold and flu season. But be on a special alert! We are still in the aftermath of one of the most contagious, highly influential epidemics in the history of humanity.

A great many persons have already been exposed to this historic virus, and it is possible that people everywhere could become contaminated. It has the potential of posing a serious threat to the stable conditions of the status quo we have known, and grown comfortable to, in our community.

I'm talking about the life-changing virus known as the "Advent Virus." It lingers in these days that follow Christmas. Be on the alert for the symptoms of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love, ironically, the same conditions given to the candles on our Advent wreath.

Here are the signs to watch out for:

-a tendency to think and act with others in mind.

-an unmistakable ability to enjoy the present moment.

-a loss of interest in judging and condemning other people.

-a loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.

-frequent, inexplicable episodes of appreciation.

-a peculiar loss of self-centeredness.

-a tendency to let go of control and allow things to happen.

-an increasing susceptibility to friendliness in others, and an uncontrollable urge to share it with others.

-a loss of interest in conflict

-a loss of the ability to worry (This is a very serious symptom)

-frequent attacks of smiling.

-An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

Be on the alert! The Advent virus is highly contagious. It may actually replicate itself and be with us for many more months, possibly even all year long.

Here's how to protect yourself:

-stay away from people who believe in God.

-focus on self-serving priorities.

-find excuses to avoid worship and praise of God.

-keep your mind closed to spiritual messages that boast of promoting forgiveness and reconciliation.

For many people in our community, it is too late. It's changed their lives forever, even for eternity.

Course 2 Has Reached 80 Lessons!

Wow! Course 2 now has 80 lessons! That's hard to believe. Almost all of them have a video to learn a new technique too. I have so many ideas yet to share, so who knows where this adventure will take us until I run out of ideas.

I love Course 2 as it is an inspiration for every layout, in addition to learning. If I were just beginning to scrap, this is what I would want. I wish someone had offered it to me.

Lesson 80 is on how to make a magnifying glass realistic when in use.

Here is a before and after fun look.

You will need to subscribe to watch the video, however.

Here is my quick and easy layout. It took longer to make the magnifying glass than it did to make the layout, so I've done all the hard work for you!
ChicagoJohnHancock

You can download the magnifying glass for a limited time, but as always, it is in the subscriber area with this lesson here forever.

Hot Toddy Test

When I went shopping last week for Thanksgiving, I was picking up some wine when a young man was on a honey-do trip to the wine department for a specific wine for a hot drink. I tried to help him find what he was looking for, but in the end he had to call his wife. In our search, I learned about this drink that was a favorite of theirs and decided to try it myself.

The recipe was simple in that it was a mixture of hot apple cider and wine. Since I could find no apple cider in the store, I decided to try this Simple Apple as it seemed most like a cider.
drink2 001B
The wine was "Country Days" from Hemman Winery in Brazeau, Missouri, a local winery.

001b
Hubby was not available, so I had to relearn how to use our cork opener! I'm too impatient for corks. I prefer the screw lids. The corks never go back in anyway and one of those special wine tops are never to be found when you need one. I think Santa needs to put some of those in my stocking!

IMG_7440B
I did enjoy the mixed drink. I'm not sure I have ever mixed wine with something else before. It was perfect for a holiday drink, but I am not sure I would drink it all the time. In other words, it was good, but not out-of-this-world-must-have-again.

I tried to determine what flavor the Country Wine was and decided it was most like blackberry, but am really totally unsure. Maybe I will try this again another time with a different wine and a different juice. As I begin thinking, the possibilities are endless.

A thousand...

A minister told the story of a dating couple sitting on a porch swing together late one evening. The young man said that he wished he had a thousand arms to hold her; a thousand ears to hear her voice; a thousand eyes to see her beauty; and a thousand mouths to tell her how much he loved her. She responded by saying, "Why? You are not using what you already have."

I think of that story every time we sing "O, for a thousand tongues."
