Bookmark Template

I am leading a Bible study tonight and decided to make some quick, easy, simple, non-fancy bookmarks to give the ladies. Our lesson tonight is on Matthew 7:24-27 and the Parable of the wise man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built his house on the sand.

I used the new guides in Photoshop Elements 8 to create a template for bookmarks that can be printed out on cardstock and cut apart. You can download (temporarily) the template by clicking here. It will permanently be in the Subscriber Area. The download includes the full sheet of my bookmark, which uses my handwriting font.

Here is what my bookmarks looked like printed out, before cutting. Since my theme is "rocks," I used a grey cardstock.

Here is one of them cut apart from the main printed sheet.

Here is a computer version of it saved directly from PSE.
This is what the template looks like. The blue lines are the guides which do not print. I made a rounded corner mat (blue) to fit in a space and then added my text and borders. I merged those layers, duplicated it 7 times, and moved them into each space. With the "snap to" guides turned on, it easily positioned itself in each space.

I thought about leaving space at the top to punch a hole and tie a ribbon, but decided my time was limited. Other ideas would be to glue on buttons, use stickers, or apply a variety of hybrid elements to the bookmarks to make them more tactile.

I hope this is helpful to you! If you use this template, please do share with me. I'd love to see your creativity!

Just use any of the word art in your layout and share it in the thread! Be inspired by this great stuff! See what others do with it. Join in the community! Comment on each other's layouts!

You can use any kits, so there is no excuse in not joining us!

Everyone who participates will receive this awesome kit! Wow!

Gallery Spotlight on Helen!

Wow! I'm so excited to see a photo of Helen! She's been SO active in the subscriber area for SO long that I've had one of those imaginary faces of who I thought she was in my head. Have you ever done that? Then when you see their real face, it is nothing like the imaginary one!

Come to the forum to meet Helen and visit her gallery. Leave her some warm fuzzies! Why not scraplift her?

Have I said enough how much I love this new gallery spotlight here at Hummie's World?

Inset Tutorial for Subscribers

Used Kit by Julie Bullock - It's a Girls World

***
I SO want to share these adorable photos with you, but unfortunately, this is not my child! You wouldn't believe how cute her eyes are!

I made this layout for a new technique challenge for Subscribers only. The challenge is to create the inset (where you see the flower). It's not as easy as it looks!

I had fun "just scrapping" again!

Twitter supports Retweets

So, log into Twitter today (because I usually read from TwitterGadget) only to find new changes regarding retweets. How cool is this? It almost makes using other applications than the real thing senseless now.

By the way, if you haven't seen my first digital scrapbooking list on twitter, check it out and join it here: http://twitter.com/HummieIsMe/digitalscrapbooking

I was only allowed to add 500 to it! Therefore, I took a break and today I am going to be starting a second list. How long until it gets to 500? http://twitter.com/HummieIsMe/digitalscrapbooking2

Oh, and check out Heidi's cool tip of keeping up with these long lists by RSS! Isn't that awesome? Thanks for sharing Heidi!

Life Magazine on Google Books

I think this is such a cool advancement in the internet world!

Google announced that Google Books has published the entire collection of famous LIFE magazine issues–almost 1900 issues, spanning 1936 to 1972. This really cool part is a full-text search of the magazine’s entire history. It's a wonderful addiction to the history resources online! How cool is that?

The Berne Convention sets forth the duration of the copyright as the life of the artist plus a minimum of 50 years. Thereafter, each country sets forth further standards. In the United States, the length of a copyright is the life of the artist plus 70 years. Therefore, I am a bit confused as to how these Life books have become "public domain." Fifty years about is 1959 and 70 years ago is 1939.

Google Books recently settled a lawsuit regarding copyright and you can read more about it here.

If you have not investigated Google Books yet, you should! http://books.google.com/
Here is the home page for the Life Magazine.

You can also view the catalog of Life Magazine images here: http://images.google.com/hosted/life
I was personally interested in the photos from Missouri.

Google is also partnering with On Demand Books so that you may purchase public domain books digitized by Google from any Espresso Book Machine at bookstores and libraries around the world. I have not seen one of these machines, but am certainly going to keep my eye out for one!

Hybrid Wall Decorations

I started this project Oh-so long ago when we repainted one wall in the living room. I wanted someplace to move all of my photos and decorations that were on the entertainment center because we want to get a big screen television (if funds hold out) that will not work with the entertainment center. Since we have such a small home, there is very little space to place decorations, so we added a 10 foot long shelf over the couch. I have yet to finish the decorating though! However, today I made some great strides with my ideas.

I made four typographical type artsy layouts and printed them out on letter size paper and cut the to 8 x 8 inches. Each has a special meaning to us. Each was made with digital scrapbooking material from various kits by Tina (her blog) and one overlay from Flergs (her blog).

This one is special because I always tease about how adventurous our family is. We can be driving along and impromptu, next-thing-you-know be exploring places others would never dare go.

I was anticipating my men's reaction with this one! This is one of "those" things I am constantly saying to them (even to hubby!). I am an optimistic person and am always of the philosophy of "where there's a will, there's a way."

I find all four of my men always saying, "I can't." It drives me nuts! I have to push them to think outside the box and just find a way! Sometimes I stare them down and dare them "do you want me to do it?" Most often they will grunt and keep trying because they don't want to be shown down by a woman! Every once in a while, as they get smarter, they reply, "sure," because they know that gets them out of a task.

My men will forever be hearing the rest of their lives in the back of their heads my voice saying "can't never could!" Today, this is the BIG reveal of the rest of the sentence. I am sometimes told, "that never makes any sense." I just smile. Now they know.

This one is special to me. I've had it on the sidebar of my blog since I first made the blog. It is one of my most favorite quotes and speaks the kind of person I hope to be or hope I am.

This one is really special to me as it was a favorite of my Grandpa. He had this sign above his work table in his basement. I remember always reading the sign as a young girl. It is so twisting in thought that you have to read it over and over and think on it. Now that I'm older, I realize why he liked this so much, especially since he was in WWII and lived through the Battle of the Bulge. Try reading it from his perspective and see if it takes on a whole new meaning for you too.

Once cut out, I adhered them to these canvas covered frames. The frames were really inexpensive at Hobby Lobby. I bought four sheets of brown scrapbooking paper (12 x 12) and adhered them to the canvas. The brown matches the opposite wall (not shown here).

The idea was to keep some consistency in each of the frames by having a brown frame-like area on each. I'm not sure I like it. I may go back and print these out at 12 x 12 and cover the whole canvas with each. It would just cost me more to print and I would have to make the effort to take the files somewhere (which I don't want to do!).

Here is a side view of them so that you can see how they are raised off the wall and see where the canvass frame is located. Each hangs with a small nail.

This is a direct on view of one of them. I'm a little short, so it's at an angle!

This is what I used to adhere everything together. The little foam squares are double-sided sticky. I used these to adhere the brown paper to the canvas and the layout to the brown paper. It was easy peasy!

Initially, I tried using these thinner clear squares because they were removable. However, they did not hold and the paper continued to fall off. I was afraid to use the permanent because the word itself is, well, so permanent! However, I have found that the permanent ones will come off satisfactorily to allow me to change the prints from time to time. It did damage the brown paper slightly, but it did not really matter as I am covering it right back up again with another print. At least they were easy enough to pull off. The removable ones were a waste of my money.

I hope you like my hybrid digital scrapbooking project and do hope that it inspires someone else. I have some other project on my to-do list to set on the shelf, so stay tuned!

Drinking From My Saucer

I've never made a fortune and it's probably too late now,
But I don't worry about that much 'cause I'm happy anyhow.

And as I go along life's way I'm reaping better than I sow,
I'm drinking from my saucer 'cause my cup has overflowed.

Haven't got a lot of riches and sometimes the going's tough,
But I've got loving ones around me and that makes me rich enough.

I thank God for his blessings and the mercies He's bestowed,
I'm drinking from my saucer 'cause my cup has overflowed.

Oh, remember times when things went wrong my faith wore somewhat thin,
But all at once the dark clouds broke and sun peeped through again.

So Lord, help me not to gripe about the tough rows that I've hoed,
I'm drinking from my saucer cause my cup has overflowed.

If God gives me strength and courage when the way grows steep and rough,
I'll not ask for other blessings 'cause I'm already blessed enough.

And may I never be too busy to help others bear their loads,
Then I'll keep drinking from my saucer 'cause my cup has overflowed.

Gallery Spotlight -- is it you?

Look at that cool graphic Dawn made for the Gallery Spotlight! Wow...I'm so impressed and thankful for what she is contributing to the community here and going out of her way to make it awesome.

Did you know that I marvel all the time at the ages of those in my classes here at Hummie's World? The majority of them are Grandmas and even Great-grandmas! I'm not sure why I don't attract the younger crowd here at Hummie's World as much as the older crowd, but I like that the older crowd is drama-free! I would love to have some more younger people though -- where are you---we want you!

I am glad that Dawn picked Eileen. She is a vital part of our community here for quite some time. She is not really into scrapbooking, but is here to learn the program and fits right in! I hope that is encouragement for others to join the site.

Come and meet Eileen, leave her warm fuzzies, and scraplift her in the forum here.

New Book of Me Guide!

When I found out that Dawn had picked Tina for the next Gallery Spotlight, my first thought was how wonderful the timing! Tina has been working hard in recent weeks to bring a new class to Hummie's World!

Tina and I have been digibuddies for many years and I am excited that she has started scrapping again after being restored from some personal messes.

Please stop by the forum threads to meet her (here) and leave her some warm fuzzies.

Anyone who has known Tina in the digiworld knows how she promotes layouts about one's self. Therefore, she has created a new self-guided course here at Hummie's World. What a great opportunity to be inspired and encouraged to just scrap about yourself! Why not create a whole book!

The first set of 20 challenges are up and ready to go! Tina is sure to be quick in getting the second set available for posting soon. I know she is excited about encouraging you to scrap about yourself.

For each set of 20 that you complete, you will receive a special icon by your name.

Please read this index page for more information. Won't you join us? Any products can be used, so there are no excuses!

My Church

http://www.facebook.com/HanoverLutheran

It has been so long since I have had time to write on my blog, especially the Bible Bits posts that some people really seemed to enjoy. I want to get back to my normal self! Now that marching band season is about to end, I am feeling on the recovery end. I've been busy with the new designer class, but as soon as it is past a certain point, I will be able to focus on other things again. I actually took the night off and just watched tv last night. Sometimes I need to do that.

What you do not know about me is my personal life and all that I do for other people behind the scenes. So, I thought I would share with you a link to my church's Fan Page. Yes, it is me behind the scenes that is maintaining the Fan Page and website. I hope you enjoy it. I want to begin writing more things for it.

Do not hesitate to share about Jesus on this Fan Page. In fact, I encourage you to do so! I do not want it to be a Fan Page about our church. Noooooooo! Everything should focus on Christ. Everything. This Fan Page is for Christ. So, help me utilize it for that by sharing and chattering on it. You will make me smile, but more importantly, you will make God smile.

The website is here: http://www.hanoverlutheran.com/
You can subscribe to it's RSS to follow it too.

Pumpkin Prayer

As I carve my pumpkin help me say this prayer:

Open my mind so I can learn about You.

(Cut the top of the pumpkin)

Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do.

(Clean out hte inside)

Open my eyes so Your love I will see.

(Cut eyes shapped like hearts)

I'm sorry for turning up my nose to all You've given me.

(Cut a nose in the shape of the cross)

Open my ears so Your word I will hear.

(Cut ears shaped like the Bible)

Open my mouth so I can tell others You're near.

(Cut the mouth in the shape of a fish)

Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen.

(Place a candle inside and light it.)
