Syncing Two EHD's

Well, I'm finally getting brave and looking more closely to see what files I lost after my desktop crash. I don't like making myself queasy thinking about it.

I am getting a new backup system going with the new set-up that is minus a desktop.

I always want all files in at least three places. Therefore, I am finding a need to sync two EHD's and the Seagate software does not allow for that option.

I downloaded SyncToy from the Microsoft Power Toys. The newest version is compatible with XP and Vista. I am finding that it is doing just what I need it to do.

The program is very user friendly. The setup refers to "left" to "right" and you choose which folder is on the left and which is on the right. Then the setup allows three choices to either "synchronize", "echo," or "contribute." If there is any hesitancy in what synchronize might do between two folders, possibly deleting files, then I would recommend always adding your new files to one folder and then always contributing them to the other folder. This setting never deletes files.

In addition, you can choose to preview what the sync will do before actually running it. You can use the program to sync any folders that are readable on your computer, including external harddrives, cameras, and portable drives. Each syncing setup can be saved to be reused again.

Some other software programs that I read recommended by others, but have not tested myself, are Syncback, Syncronize It!, and GoodSync.

Hey Hummie,

I have been using sync-toy for about 6 months now and like it a lot. I really like the 3 choices "synchronize", "echo," or "contribute." and have found the need to do both synchronize and echo in different setups. I do mostly synchronize though.

Yes definitely backup is important!!!

Very useful information. I was just looking into buying a cable that does this so I can tranfer info from desktop to laptop.
I will give this a try. Thanks again. :)

Cool. I haven't played with this program in a while. Looks like they have made some improvements.
