The Choice
Max Lucado

But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law. Galatians 5:22-23/New Living Translation

I choose goodness.
I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one.
I will be overlooked before I will boast. I will confess before I accuse. I choose goodness.

*****
As I reflect on the word "goodness," I find it is one of those common words we say often, but wonder what it really means. I say "Oh, goodness" all the time.

Dictionary.com's definition:

noun 1. the state or quality of being good.
2. moral excellence; virtue.
3. kindly feeling; kindness; generosity.
4. excellence of quality: goodness of workmanship.
5. the best part of anything; essence; strength.
6. a euphemism for God: Thank goodness!
–interjection 7. (used in expressions of surprise, alarm, etc.): Goodness, you gave me a start! Goodness gracious!

Mr. Lucado's writing seems to take the definition of moral excellence and virtue.

We all know what is right and what is wrong. It is inherent within us. However, to choose to do what is right is sometimes difficult.

I like how the definition uses the word "excellence." It isn't just being morally right, but we should be morally excellent--always at the top and at our best.

Following the Holy Spirit will produce the fruit of goodness in us. If we just listen to the Holy Spirit, and choose to follow, nothing but goodness will come out of us.

Not always easy to do.

Thank you for taking the time to share this. We are currently enjoying working thru Max Lucado's John 3:16 study and finding some great nuggets in it from Max.
