Chat (with Freebie) tonight at DST!

I invite everyone to join a chat at DigishopTalk with Eva Kipler and myself at 10 p.m. Eastern time (which is 9 p.m. Central time for me).

Name Tags on Birdhouses



This is a hybrid project I did as a gift.

I made the names with digital scrapbooking, printed them out, cut them out, and decoupaged them to small pieces of wood to hang from the birdhouses.

I used ModgePodge decoupage and it should keep the wood protected in weather/wet. I applied it to all sides of the wood.I made the chain (uck, tweezers) and it is pushed into the back of the wood with a tack.

I used a spot of glue-gun glue at the top of the chain to hold it in place against the wind.

Here's my layout! It was hard finding applicable photos without going to the really old ones, but was happy to find these. The guys were having so much fun, I quietly looked the other way. If I remember right, someone else came along and corrected them and stopped them. I acted as if I didn't hear a thing.

No credits. I like doing simple layouts all about the photos without papers and element. At least it cost less that way!

after-Christmas Blahs

Is anyone else experiencing the after-Christmas Blahs with me?

You run around busy busy for days, shopping shopping, wrapping wrapping, go out to eat together to get in some family time, cooking cooking, ride around looking at lights as family time, baking baking, delivering surprise cookies to neighbors, wrapping wrapping, go out to watch movie as a family, cleaning and cleaning. All of the vacation day from work goes by so quickly and doesn't even feel like a vacation.

Then on Christmas Eve company comes over, wrapping wrapping, rushing off to late worship service, and plopping down in bed totally exhausted. Christmas morning is spent together around the tree unwrapping everything you just took days to wrap, followed by pushing everyone in and out of the showers, making them put on dress clothes, loading up a cooler of foods and somehow managing to shove the cooler, tons of gifts, and other bags of food and stuff into the vehicle, all while managing to leave a seat for the children, who have to sit with stuff on their laps for a one and one-half hour drive to Grandma's.

There's unloading, more Christmas and more loading up and more travel, followed more unloading. You finally plop down in bed once again, totally exhausted, glad it is all over.

The next morning you drag yourself out of bed to head for work and after a long day at work, you return home, walk in the door, and it hits you......

you stand there in your kitchen

staring at the disarray

boxes everywhere

dirty food containers from the long trip everywhere

added dishes from the boys being home all day everywhere

empty plastic containers and papers of instructions and warranties everywhere

and the boys have been home all day and have not lifted one hand

and you stand there totally exhausted and stare

and the after-Christmas blahs hit you hard.

How can I even cook the boys supper when I cannot see my counter or table?

And to top it all off, my wrist is still injured and carrying anything of any weight re-injures it (ie. pots of food, laundry baskets, cutting up food) and it's been re-injured for days on end and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

And you stand there and stare.

And the after-Christmas Blahs sink in further.

After working about the house, I sat down for some quiet time in the normally uplifting digi-community, only to to find it in an uproar. A popular subscriber community for designers run by Tandika Star has shut down a site on Christmas day due to pirating and words are being hurled everywhere. It's like watching a train wreck, you cannot turn your eyes away from it. I head on over to the blog which has caused uproar in the digi-community for months on end to see for myself what all the fuss is about.

Now, I've never joined this community that shut down on purpose because I am a tutorial writer and I have always wanted to be careful to not be accused of stealing other's tutorials, so although I've always wanted to join, I never have. And on the infamous blog is a link to see one of the tutorials and the little bad guy on my left shoulder argues with the little good guy on my right shoulder and I reach out with mouse to test one of the links because curiousity gets the best of me, and I get a message that the link has been taken down and my IP has been logged. Great. Getting involved in the fiasco was the last thing I wanted to do. And just like that train wreck, I look and look and get sucked into the tragedy.

And the after-Christmas Blahs sink in even lower. It's time for a glass of wine, huh?

And all this following all the ugliness of the pirating and other such stuff and the ugliness of the closing of The DigiShoppe and all the hype about Ashley Olson (not to be confused with Ashley Olsen). What is becoming of the digi-world we all so loved?

We say some of the dumbest stuff, don't we, when we are wronged. We are negative, criticle, and gossiping. Sometimes I just want to say to some people, "Listen to yourself! Meet yourself!" Is what you are saying important to Jesus?

It hurts God when we hurt one another. Saying a bunch of stuff just because we feel wronged may hurt others in ways we cannot imagine. Evaluate what you wrote? Is saying all that dumb stuff helpful? Did it change anything? Maybe it was helpful to make yourself feel better, but was it helpful in any other way?

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.


Of course, some things do need to be said, so don't get me wrong, but just say it and move on. Our words need to be working words toward good change. We do not need to be reading a bunch of non-working words. Of course, the pirating must be stopped and we as a community need to be taking action, with working words, but dragging someone down is non-working words.

Even just reading the negativity, although I was not personally hurt, got me down. What we say influences how others feel.

Words are a container for power. That blog and its words has way too much power over us and we need to break the cycle.

We should be making trees of good fruit. For those who have spoken too much and not held their tongue, you will be recognized by your fruit.

One person at DST which I recognized by her good fruit is Thena. While all the hype was going on, she was off blessing others finding good resources.

Now, to get back to my own sinning. Although I've managed to hold my tongue for the most part, I still did go peek at that blog and get caught up in reading those threads. I've done so well to stay away for the most part, but sometimes I just get drawn into it. For the most part and majority of the time, I have no desire to read such negativity and it is easy to stay away. Only occassionally does curiosity get the better of me.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.


I pray that God will take away my sense of curiousity and give me the strength to only seek after whatever is noble, right, and pure. I pray that He wipe out of my mind all things of negativity and to help me think of such things that are excellent and praiseworthy. I know, God, that I still need a lot of work on me and I thank you for how you continue to move my heart.

Making PSE Use Less RAM

There are several methods you can utilize to make Photoshop Elements use less RAM. As in my Plug-ins Tutorial recommendations, it is best not to install all of the plug-ins permanently. My tutorial shares a way to put .8bf files in a separate folder (one that can be backed up) and how to temporarily keep them from loading by using the tilde character (~) in the front of folders or file names.


I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that Photoshop Elements also comes with pre-installed filters. Take a moment to evaluate which pre-installed filters you do not use and keep them too from loading using the tilde character (~).

Designer Technique - (Kelly Shuts) Creating a Soft Fade in Photoshop

I have been too busy to actively recruit and remind designers, so I was blessed when Kelly Shuts found me and volunteered. I enjoy meeting other designers and getting to know them and I welcome you to get to know Kelly with me today.

Often, we are stuck with a small area to journal after putting all of our photos on a layout, but that space is not the right contrast for seeing text. Kelly is sharing with us today a technique she uses so that you can journal on any paper.

Kelly Shuts is a name I've been familar with a long time, but I've never gotten to know who she is and where she designs. She designs for traditional paper supplies at Dream Street Papers and I clicked on over there and was inspired by their gallery... do take a peek at it. You can keep up with Kelly on her blog where you will find some great craft ideas.

Kelly is also did the website design and graphics for Digital Scrapbook Previews, a site owned by Amy Teets. If you have not visited there, it's a great place to find new kits or kits of a specific topic.

Kelly sells at A Cherry on Top (check out the coupon below!) and Scrapbook-Elements and her designs have a soft or warm feeling about them, perfect for the majority of scrapbook pages, as well as some templates and other items.

Video Tutorials - Save for Web and Making Ribbons (& Freebies)

I made two video tutorials this morning. The first is for using the "Save for Web" tool in Photoshop Elements in order to save for the appropriate size to upload to galleries.

The second tutorial is a Designer challenge to make ribbons. You can download the 4 ribbons I made that match the January color palette designer challenge. I welcome you to play and discuss how you make ribbons. Please share your results with everyone in the thread.

You may always do this challenge, but the video tutorial is up for a limited time as it will be later moved to the subscriber area.

Christmas Nostalgia

I was reflecting this morning on Charles Dicken's tale, also now movies that are played during the holidays. There are so many lessons in this tale to reflect upon during the holiday season, too many to enumerate.

In his greed, he was a scrooge and turned everyone else around him grumpy. What a great reminder that our actions and our mood can effect those around us. Is your home stressed and grumpy right now? Change it by changing yourself first.

Next the tale continues as a story of redemption, actively seeking forgiveness from those he has sinned against. Although this should be a daily thing for Christians (as repentance and turning our ways), what better focus to have between now and the end of the year? Who have you harmed this year that you can reach out to before the end of the year?

The tale ends as a story of goodwill. Even the poor can do things to spread goodwill. What have you done this year to spread goodwill? Of course, the whole concept of Christmas is spreading goodwill, complete from Christmas cards to Christmas gifts to giving toys to toy collections for the needy. However, what else can we do that is special and different on our own. I want to make it a point to do something for at least one person, unexpectantly, before Christmas morning.

I've had one of those "King Midas" days where everything I touch gets messed up (tomorrow I'm turning things to gold), but I wanted to get this up for those who want to participate by entering their links.

Update: Here it is! I was inspired by this Benjamin Franklin quote to journal about how my boys are always content and ask for next to nothing for christmas. I used my freebie stuff for the January designer challenge and ribbon challenge, along with the metal cross made by Iris for the same challenge, and Katie Petiet's frame. I don't do brights well! So I forced myself to use the papers I made, although I'm scrooging about it!

Christmas Blessings Mix

I can see this being really cute with a digital scrapbooking tag using photos of the items extracted from the photos and placed on the tag.

CHRISTMAS BLESSING MIX
BUGLES---The trumpet that sounded at his birth.
PRETZELS---Mary' s arms wrapped around her baby
FRUITS AND NUTS-----The gifts the wise men brought.
CANDY CANE(S)---Shepherds staffs.
CHOCOLATE STARS-- The star of Bethlehem.
HERSHEY KISSES--The love he has for you.
RAFFIA---The hay in the manger that ties it all together.

Use dried fruit mix and two different nuts.
Put in treat bags tied with raffia.
You can then put it in a mug, or any suitable container that recipient may need, or just leave in treat bag.

Crockpot Sesame Seed Chicken

I'm always on the lookout for easy meals as a working mom! Doesn't this sound good...let me know if you try it.

Crockpot Sesame Seed Chicken

2 1bs. skinless, boneless chicken thighs.
1/2 C. soy sauce
1/3 C. packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1 Tbs. ketchup
2 Tbs. toasted sesame seeds

Place chicken thighs in the slow cooker. Whisk together remaining ingredients in a bowl and pour over chicken. Cover and cook on low 6 to 8 hours or on high 3 or 4.

This video is very popular over at Youtube--it makes a very clear statement about being politically correct.



I also hope you enjoy this video from 1984 by Band Aid--a collection of famous singers/bands coming together in the 80's for a good cause. I am showing my age when I say I recognize some of these faces and voices. You can see who is singing which lyrics on the wiki.

Christmas Concert

I thought I'd share just a bit of the videos I took for the high school Christmas concert. I took these with my left hand because my right had a very bad sprain, so they are very shaky.

What amazed me most was the support of people in our city. Take a peek at this quick video I did --and remember you cannot even see all of the people as some are underneath where I am sitting.




Amazing, huh? Have I said how much I love my city enough?

Cake Box Cookies

I have another favorite recipe with a cake box for cookies and so this one looks great too!

Cake Box Cookies

Ingredients:

1 box cake mix, any flavor
6 ounces chocolate chips, any flavor to match cake mix
2 eggs
2 T. water
1/4 c. applesauce

Directions:

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie
sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.

A Total Stranger Just Blessed Me

I spent the afternoon Christmas shopping and was at the checkout and noticed the desktop calendars and said outloud how I'd love to have one, but that I never buy for myself.

A gentlemen began asking me which one I liked. I assumed he wanted help picking out one for his wife. I picked up the one on Proverbs and he said that that was the one that first caught his eye too. He decided to purchase it and I exclaimed to the checkout lady that I had just helped her sell something.

As I was walking away, the gentlement quickly placed the calendar in front of my face and said "Here, Be blessed."

Wow, I was so shocked I couldn't find any words but "thank you" and quietly left.

There are good people in this world who are reaching out to do kindnesses to total strangers. We all, most particularly me, should learn from this guy's example and make it a goal to bless total strangers in any way we can, even if it is the smallest of actions.

Today's calendar says:

There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. Proverbs 30:1 --There is nothing sadder than a person who rejects who he is and where he comes from. We should be proud of our heritage.

How fitting for me to have this verse for today as someone who enjoys scrapbooking and looking to old photos and learning about where I came from. This reinforces for me that it is okay to be spending my time doing what I am doing.

I should go dig out my article I wrote about what heritage means to me and share it again.

Claudette challenged me to figure out a snowglobe tutorial at About.com. It took me a while to be able to find time to play with it, but I finally did last evening and I adapted it to my creating style and for Photoshop Elements 6. Christmas Tree Kit

I was so excited to get a new kit done and in my new store the other day! Yes, just now finding time to blog about it!

I was even more excited to have my very first paying customer! I honored her by giving back to her a gift certificate to future purchases in my store.

The inspiration for this kit came while doing a layout of decorating our Christmas tree. I pulled the colors right from a photo of our tree.

This was a hard one for me, so I used it as an opportunity to get another one of the my garden layouts done for my collection. It's been so long!

I made the papers plain with no texture and blah colors to fit the theme.

Toothpick and Christmas Card Ornament


At one time I had a home daycare and each year came up with a new ornament for the children to give their parents.

This was one of the easiest ornmanets to do!

This ornmanet is merely toothpicks glued to each other (gluing around circular) with a cut out of a Christmas card in the middle. I had saved previous year's Christmas cards and allowed the children to choose whatever photo they wanted. Of course, I thought the nativity scene looked most appropriate.

I suppose you could be creative and find other things or make other things to glue in the center.

My dog has been cracking me up, so I just had to scrap it. We moved her bed to the end of the hallway and can get her to sleep there at night, but during the day she insists on resting where her bed used to be, under the tree! I have to get in her face and say "GO" while pointing away from the tree and she walks away all sad. But just like a child, no sooner than we are out of site, she goes back!

We are having a grand fight and she's winning!

I'm Defected

Uggg! I sprained/twisted my right wrist today and I cannot even turn the ignition key with it! I can type, which is good, but I cannot turn it well or put any weight on it (by holding things).

I guess this is God's way of slowing me down. I do not feel much like doing anything now.

I was talking to my son and said "I hate being [pausing as I was thinking of a word]" and he finished my sentence with "defected." Ha ha ha...that made me laugh.

What is it about drinking out of wine glasses that makes me feel I am pampering myself?

Here is my latest self-indulgence that I am stuck on--frothy chocolate milk in a wine glass.

Couldn't get easier than that!

Breakfast Skillet

I could have breakfast for dinner any day of the week!

1/2 lb. pork sausage
2 C. frozen shredded hash brown potatoes
10 oz. can diced tomatoes
1/2 lb. Velveeta cubed
6 eggs
2 T. water

Brown sausage in large skillet on medium heat; drain.
Add potatoes and tomatoes; cook 5 minutes or until potatoes are browned, stirring occasionally. Top with Velveeta.
Beat eggs and water with wire whisk. Pour evenly over ingredients in skillet. Cover. Reduce heat to low. Cook 10-12 minutes or until egg mixture is set in center and Velveeta is melted.
Let stand, uncovered 5 minutes before cutting into wedges to serve.

I attended Advent Service last night and enjoyed it. I love reading things that make me focus on what I am supposed to during this season. It is especially hard with all the hustle and bustle of the season.

Advent is the time for us to prepare for the coming of Jesus--not only his birth, but when he comes again. If you did know He were coming tonight, what would you be doing differently tonight?

I encourage you to take a moment now.

Stop your hurry.

Give some time to God--now.

Spend some time with God while watching this video of my favorite Christmas song and reading this poem I received via e-mail.

Blog Carnival

Well, the last volunteer for the blog carnival did not follow through for November 15th and I have been too busy setting up my new place to even think about the carnival. I think it is time we try to get it back off the ground now. There has not been much support of it and I wonder if I should continue it.

If you would like to volunteer for the next one (I will do December 15th, but could use a volunteer for January 1), let me know, otherwise I may just have to collect links and share on my own. The majority of the time it has been things I have found anyway as I cannot seem to get others (accept a few committed individuals) to submit things they see.

Here is a list of things I found in the past or were submitting to the carnival since November 1st. (some may be repeats from the last carnival, but I wanted to make sure nothing was missed.)

These are mostly all older links, but since December 15th is around the corner, I'm going to work on links for it rather than add to this one.

I thought and thought and what came to mind was how much my Granny loved the place where she grew up, so much so that she always returned to it, even if it meant being away from her family.

The frames are made with a solid white box, inside dark grey stroke, drop shadow, and soft light blending mode.

Template Freebie #24


Available in both square and rectangle.

Seems there are always a lot of downloads, but very few who participate in the challenge to make a layout and post it to the gallery.

I have a question. Does it really take a freebie reward for doing a challenge to get people to do them? I really do not have time to make freebies like that. I'd rather get out the inspiration.

Maybe that's because that's what I prefer to see in digi-sites. I like inspiration to get layouts done and rarely even care about the prize. Maybe I'm not like most people.

What do you all think?

The Things Lawsuits Make Us Endure


Oh my, we decided last night to go to a scout meeting as it had been so long since we had been to one due to marching band, so I took in my new vehicle manual to read during the meeting.

The first page I opened up to had this hysterical "caution" box warning me that I could "lose control of the vehicle if [I] try to adjust the manual driver's seat while the vehicle is moving. The sudden movement could startle and confuse [me], or make [me] push a pedal when [I] do not want to."

That sent me right into giggle mode! I turned the page--and yet another page- and the book is crowded full of these duh-you-ought-to-know-that warnings.

Now why in the world would they put these stupid warnings in the book? The only thing I can think of is that somewhere someone sued who knows which car company because they adjusted their seat while driving and had a crash and blamed it on the car manufacturer. So, now every car manufacturer needs to include this disclaimer in every manual. The more lawsuits, the more disclaimer/caution boxes go into a manual.

What do you think? Am I right? Or is there another explanation? Or maybe they really think we all have that small of an amount of common sense.

On a side note, I spent 12 1/2 hours over the weekend playing with video codes for the forum and I think I've finally figured it out! I only have two more steps left and I'll have my site up and going completely! I can tweak it more thereafter and get more content up--although there is quite a lot there already--go check it out.

Cheddar Spread

Entertaining? Doesn't this sound easy? I wonder if it is any good.

1 8 oz. cream cheese
1/2 C. Miracle Whip
1 C. shredded Cheddar cheese
8 pieces bacon cooked & crumbled

Combine cream cheese and salad dressing; mixing until well blended. Add cheddar cheese; mix well. Spoon into 9" pie plate, sprinkle with bacon pieces. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

Christmas Freebies

I finally finished my contribution for the big Christmas Around the World collaberative kit (you will be able to find over 60 links to contributions on the blog) that will go live on December 10th (yes, it is a dead link right now).

However, a few of us are gathering in my forum and posting ours early so that others who do not design can make quick pages with our things to share. Feel free to join us. You can find my contribution and others here.
